Most home cleans take somewhere between 2 and 6 hours, depending on the size of your home, how much needs doing, and whether it’s a regular visit or a one-off. If you’re booking a cleaner for the first time, here’s what typically drives that number, and roughly what to expect for a home like yours.
Typical hours by home size
These are general guides rather than fixed rules, the exact time also depends on how much cleaning is needed and which tasks you’d like covered.
- Studio or 1-bedroom apartment: around 2 hours
- 2-3 bedroom home: around 3-4 hours
- 4+ bedroom home, or a home with several bathrooms and living areas: around 5-6 hours
Larger or older homes, homes with a lot of glass or unusual layouts, and homes that haven’t been cleaned in a while will generally sit at the longer end of these ranges.
What can be done in a shorter booking?
A shorter 2-3 hour visit is usually enough to cover the basics: vacuuming and mopping floors, wiping down kitchen and bathroom surfaces, dusting, and a general tidy of the main living areas. If you want extras included, like the insides of the oven or fridge, windows, or ironing and laundry, these add to the time needed, so they’re better suited to a longer booking or an occasional deep clean.
Regular cleans vs one-off and deep cleans
An established regular clean is usually quicker than a one-off or first-time clean, because the home is kept more consistently maintained between visits rather than needing to be reset from scratch each time. If it’s been a while since your home has had a proper clean, or you’re after a bigger reset (moving house, getting ready for guests, a seasonal deep clean), it’s worth budgeting extra time, or booking a one-off clean specifically designed for that kind of job.
Housekeeping and multiple visits a week
If your household needs more than a weekly clean, hours can be spread across multiple shorter visits rather than one long one. Many of our busier clients opt for a housekeeping service, with a cleaner coming twice a week, several times a week, or even daily for a couple of hours at a time. This works well if you’d rather have the basics kept on top of continuously, rather than tackling everything in one longer session.
Scheduling and arrival
When you book, you’ll agree on a day and a rough time window with your cleaner, and they’ll aim to arrive within that window each visit so you know what to expect. If your schedule changes from week to week, let your Area Coordinator know, most bookings can be adjusted with a bit of notice.
Final thoughts
As a rough guide, expect 2 hours for a smaller home, up to 5-6 hours for a larger one, with the exact time shaped by what you’d like included and how often your cleaner visits. If you’re not sure what’s right for your home, our one-off clean is a good way to get a feel for how long your place takes before settling into a regular schedule.
