Joy Vess’s working life began early. When her father died, she was just fourteen. Her mother told her to go and get a job – even though Joy wasn’t legally old enough to leave school yet. So she did.
Joy didn’t finish Grade 10. Instead, she learned by doing. She worked in printing shops and government roles where expectations were clear and learning was non-negotiable. Everything she didn’t know, she taught herself – through experience, books, observation, and asking questions.Bookkeeping, and Profit!
The idea for Absolute Domestics came when Joy saw a gap in the market: busy households needing reliable help at home, and people looking for flexible, meaningful work. That simple connection became the foundation of a service built on trust, care, and reliability.
Her beginnings were humble. Absolute Domestics started with a single newspaper ad and a notepad. When the first call came in, Joy didn’t make the sale and that early lesson – learn fast, adapt quickly, and keep going – shaped the way she built the business from day one. Joy Vess is the Founder and CEO of Absolute Domestics — a business she built from a back room in her home over three decades ago.
What started as a simple idea has grown into one of Australia and New Zealand’s most trusted domestic cleaning agencies, now supporting thousands of households each week and a network of more than 5,000 independent cleaners.
But this business was never just about cleaning.
