Professional Cleaning Tips For Carpet Cleaning

Carpets add a nice warm feeling to any home. The touch of colour or texture can really elevate a room's presence. However, carpets also go through a lot- from shoes, spills and pets, they’re a high traffic area and can harbour a lot of unwanted dirt.

With so many different ways to clean and keep your carpet looking fresh, actually cleaning your carpet can become a daunting task.

As professional domestic cleaners, we’ve got the know-how to ensure all our client’s carpets and rugs are always fresh, here’s how:

Test for colour fastness

Before you take on the task of deep cleaning your carpets, you want to test your carpets' colour fastness. This is especially important, colourfast carpets don’t bleed, fade or change colour when you clean them or remove any stains.

Doing this test helps you decide what is the best carpet cleaning method, product, and even if they can go in your washing machine.

Follow these steps to test if your carpet is colourfast

  1. Find an unnoticeable spot on your carpet, dampen a cloth with the carpet or stain remover you plan on using
  2. Put the cloth on the carpet for about an hour then pat the damp area with a clean white cloth
  3. If the cloth stains, the product isn’t suited for your carpet and alternative methods or carpet removers may be needed.

  1. Start by thoroughly vacuuming the carpet. For any stains or heavily soiled spots, use the appropriate cleaning solution. Remember to dab, not rub the area as it can damage your carpet’s fibres.
  2. Mix some baking soda and salt together and have a spray bottle filled with cold water.
  3. Sprinkle your baking soda and salt mixture on your carpet. Proceed to spray the area with cold water, ensuring the area is very damp but not sopping wet.
  4. Using a scrub brush, work the baking soda into your carpet fibres.
  5. After scrubbing down your carpet, use old towels or rags to wipe any loose soil. Allow your carpet to air dry completely. From there you can use a vacuum to suck up any baking soda left on the fibres.

The end result should leave your carpet looking bright and smelling fresh!
